POSITION SUMMARY:


We are currently recruiting for an Engineering Technician ll. The Engineering Technician ll is responsible for reviewing signs, pavement marking, and other traffic control devices in field.  Monitor daily workload and provide effective customer service in a timely manner while responding to various traffic engineering requests from public officials, citizens, and other government agencies and related duties as assigned. This FULL-TIME position starts at $30 per hour and is located in Fairfax, VA.

·         Conduct filed reviews and collect traffic data on roadways in Arlington & Fairfax Counties and provide solutions to improve traffic flow and operations, as well as work with citizens to address neighborhood traffic concerns and transportation safety issues.


·         Review signs, pavement marking, and other traffic control devices in the field. 


·         Monitor daily workload and provide effective customer service in a timely manner while responding to various traffic engineering requests from public officials, citizens, and other government agencies. 


·         Assist in the collection and evaluation of data required to complete traffic engineering studies. 


·         Provide effective oral and written communications in responding to local elected officials, government agencies, and the public. 



  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems

  • Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.

  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.

  • Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


COMPLETE TRAFFIC ENGINEERING STUDIES -


Conducts signage, pavement marking, residential traffic management and other vehicular and pedestrian studies following simple traffic engineering practices and VDOT policies, and procedures in completing basic data collection assignments in a timely manner.


Assists in the collection of data required to complete traffic engineering studies.                                         


Accurately documents field conditions when investigating traffic issues in the field.


Presents study findings to supervisor in an accurate, clear, and concise manner.


 


COMPLETE TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DESIGNS and/or SKETCHES –


Develops sketches and/or designs involving signage, pavement markings and other traffic control devices with minimal supervision.


Utilizes Traffic Engineering and Microsoft Office software.  


Submits completed work to field crews using proper procedure and coordinates with other VDOT units as needed to ensure installation.


 


ORAL/WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS and MEETINGS –


Internal and external customers are provided with a responsive service relating to traffic engineering requests.


Phone calls are returned promptly within 1-2 days and written communications involving e-mails or acknowledgement letters are sent in a timely manner.


Assists the public, governmental agencies, and other VDOT units with a cooperative and can-do attitude.


Presents and discusses information pertaining to residential traffic management and other related issues in meetings with local elected officials, other government agencies, and the public.


 


WORKLOAD MANAGEMENT –


Manages workload monitoring pending work and responding to requests from local officials, other government agencies, and the general public in a timely manner when assigned by senior Technicians.


Expedites certain projects as directed by supervisor.


Utilizes TE studies tracking system to manage workload.


Logs out completed tasks and places scanned copy of work in the files.


Required Qualifications :

Required Skills/Abilities:



  • A working knowledge of traffic control devices like signs and pavement markings.

  • Experience collecting and analyzing field data and developing recommendations would be helpful also designing plans and reading plan sheets.

  • Must be able to recognize traffic hazards in the field.

  • Candidate should be able to recommend modifications or additions to the existing roadway networks to increase transportation efficiency and capacity after just a few weeks on the job.

  • Working knowledge of standard office and Microsoft Office (any design) software including but not limited to MicroStation(CADD), Synchro, and Highway Capacity Software is extremely helpful.

  • Demonstrated skill in verbal/written communications on technical subjects and customer service issues. Ability to interact successfully with others.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.

  • Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).

  • Ability to work collaboratively.

  • Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to effectively communicate to large and small group audiences.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.


Education and Experience:



  • High school graduation or equivalent required; additional training in Traffic Engineering preferred, Civil Engineering, or a combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to perform the job.

  • Valid driver’s license required.


 


Physical Requirements:



  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times. 

  • Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

  • Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
