POSITION SUMMARY:
We are currently recruiting for an Environmental Specialist l. The Environmental Health Associate performs environmental health (EH) work of moderate difficulty, requiring some independent judgment and knowledge of Environmental Health laws and regulations. Performs routine investigations of animal bites, monitors confined animals to observe condition, packages specimens for transport. Perform inspections of hotel/motels, swimming pools, marinas, summer camps, migrant labor camps and campgrounds. Investigate environmental complaints. Draft schematic drawings for water well construction permits and completes data entry in the state environmental health database. Performs on-site inspection of completed wells in uncomplicated situations. Determines compliance of well location with permitted area and compliance with well construction techniques. Performs other routine EH inspections of low to moderate technical complexity. District travel is required; therefore, employees must maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to VDH’s drive safety policy.
This FULL-TIME position starts at $21-$24 per hour and is located in Petersburg, VA.

- Skills in composition of reports, data entry, effective communication, using language appropriate to customer’s level of understanding.
- Proficient in basic computer software programs.
- Ability to conduct inspections and investigations in all areas of environmental health, to work outdoors and perform moderately strenuous physical labor during all seasons.
- Skills in problem solving essential. Must be able to provide own transportation for travel within district.
- Ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent experience and/or training in relation to the duties.
- Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems
- Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.
- Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.
- Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, proof of education (diploma or transcripts), professional licensure verification, and E-Verify. Work Schedule:
40 hours or more per week: weekdays, weekends, and evening hours as needed. |

Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.
- Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
- Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
