POSITION SUMMARY:


ATHENA is seeking an entry-level candidate to perform routine tasks related to the management of Food Services within a Correctional Facility. This position reports to the Food Services Manager and does not involve supervising staff. The Food Services Assistant is responsible for overseeing the preparation, cooking, and serving meals to staff and incarcerated individuals within the facility. This includes training and supervising inmate workers, ensuring kitchen cleanliness and sanitation standards are met, and adhering to nutritional and Department of Health guidelines. The role also involves supervising the safe use of kitchen equipment, securing the kitchen at the end of each shift, maintaining inventory, and ensuring proper food storage and recordkeeping as required by governing agencies. This Full-time position starts at $19 per hour and is located in Hanover, VA.

  • Responsible for supervising the preparation, cooking and serving meals in the facility for staff and incarcerated individuals, to include the training of inmate workers;

  • Responsible for the cleanliness of the kitchen and equipment.

  • Enforce and follow sanitation and cleaning standards for kitchen operations.

  • Ensure food is prepared within timelines to meet nutritional standards.

  • Ensure food meets Department of Health Standards.

  • Ensure food served is proportioned correctly and according to directions.

  • Daily, direct contact and supervision of inmates.

  • Supervise the use of kitchen equipment safely.

  • Responsible for securing the kitchen facility at the end of each shift.

  • Compile and maintain utensil inventory.

  • Maintain accurate records as required by governing agencies.

  • Responsible for the proper storage and use of food.

  • Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within the division and company.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


 


Rotating Schedule


2:00am-10:00am, 9:00am-5:30pm and 10:00am-6:30pm


 


Candidate must be able to work any of those shifts.


 


Required Qualifications :

Required Skills/Abilities:


 



  • Knowledge of to include but not limited to: FDA nutritional requirements and State Health Department. requirements as it applies to food service and special dietary requirements; ability to utilize recipes and estimate appropriate food amounts.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and verbally.

  • Ability to calculate quantities of food; read and comprehend documents such as menus, recipes, and other pertinent documents.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks.


 


Education and Experience:


·         High school diploma or equivalent, required.


·         Must be at least twenty years of age.


·         VA Driver’s License Required 


·         Minimum 3 years Food Preparation experience required.


·         Prior experience in Corrections and/or Institutional food preparation is preferred.


 


Physical Requirements:



  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.
