POSITION SUMMARY:


We are currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Operator. The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for maintenance, installation, and repair of water distribution systems, including addressing water leaks and performing chlorination. The role involves physical labor in various weather conditions, and related duties as assigned. This FULL TIME position starts at $21.00 per hour and is located in Newport, VA.


 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with performing scheduled and preventative maintenance and installation on the water distribution system; repairs water leaks, mains, services, and meters as needed. 




  • Duties include assisting with directional boring, chlorination and disinfection of water main, pressure testing and inspection of water main, performs flow checks and takes water samples, assists with water quality flushing and water main shut offs.




  • Assists with asphalt operations and performs general landscaping duties at job sites upon conclusion of projects.




  • Follows safety procedures to provide for safety of equipment and safety of others. 




  • Performs routine checks, preventive maintenance, installations, and repair of related equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed.




  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems




  • Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.




  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.




  • Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.




  • Perform other related duties as assigned.




Required Qualifications :

Required Skills/Abilities:




  • Ability to work outside in all elements doing physical labor. 




  • Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.




  • Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).




  • Ability to work collaboratively.




  • Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.




  • Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.




  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.




  • Ability to prioritize tasks.




  • Ability to effectively communicate to large and small group audiences.




  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.








Education and Experience:




  • High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.




  • Valid Drivers license and clean driving record required. 




  • Must have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or CDL Permit and 2 years of heavy equipment experience (i.e., utility construction, pipelaying, and/or backhoe experience).




  • Preferred experience with utility construction, pipelaying, and or backhoe experience.    




  • Must have steel toe safety shoes.






Physical Requirements:




  • Ability to work outside in all elements doing physical labor




  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds at times. 




  • Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm.




  • Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
