POSITION SUMMARY:

We are currently recruiting for a Meter Technician. The Meter Reader is responsible for performing water meter inspections, and related duties as assigned. This FULL TIME position starts at $17.65 per hour and is located in Newport News, VA.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Locates, reads, records meter readings and related field condition data into a handheld microprocessor for assigned reread route. The ability to take directions from Supervisor or possibly Senior and communicate any issues that need addressed. Ability to navigate the entire peninsula to complete assignments in the most efficient manner.


• Operates motor vehicles to assign reread route locations.  Uses radio to communicate with Dispatch and Operations.


• Inspects and maintains all issued operating equipment in a clean/ready state. We work in all types of weather conditions to include rain, heat, cold and snow and in all types of geographic areas such as curbed neighborhoods and non-curbed areas, which may or may not have hills and ditches.


• Meter Reader will have exposure to insects, reptiles and possibly dogs.


• Experience is a plus but not necessary, so I am interested in people who have worked outside or in warehouses and who are on their feet all day and are used to being busy most of the day.


• Must be able to drive.


• Must be able to read numbers accurately.


• Must be on time every day, this is a team effort.


• Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.


• Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.


• Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.


• Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.


• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.


• Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).


• Ability to work collaboratively.


• Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.


• Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.

• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma and 1-2 year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience


• Knowledge of the installation , operation, function and basic repair testing of water meters and meter boxes to include inspections, operations attachments , and sprinkler systems.


• Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, sand safety regulations related to the meter maintenance and other work related precautions.


• Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Physical Requirements:

• Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. 


• Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching , and crawling. 


• Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds at times. 


• Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:00 pm.


• Valid Driver's License required


• Clean driving record required
