Job Summary
The Peer Support Specialist provides individualized support to people experiencing mental health, substance use, or co-occurring conditions. Using their own lived experience, the specialist helps individuals build skills, confidence, and resources to support independence and long-term recovery. The role includes supporting individuals through transitions in care and encouraging community integration and wellness.
This position reports to an administrative supervisor and is part of the Community Behavioral Health and Social Determinants unit within Addiction and Transition Services under the Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH).
Key Responsibilities
- Offer peer support based on personal experience with recovery
- Help individuals develop self-advocacy skills and recovery goals
- Assist during transitions between levels of care
- Provide community-based support and maintain appropriate documentation
- Work collaboratively with clinical and administrative teams
- Use state vehicle for field-based support as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’s License
- Personal experience with mental illness and/or addiction and recovery
- Willingness to self-disclose lived experience to support and encourage others
