POSITION SUMMARY:


We are currently recruiting for a Scientist. The Scientist is responsible for working the Lord Fairfax Health District to support efforts such as community assessments for chronic conditions, developing evaluation frameworks and models for new population health programs and policies, collecting, and analyzing data to inform and evaluate programming and conducting innovate research to identify effective interventions for health inequities. This FULL-TIME position starts at $28 per hour and is in Winchester, VA.




 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.



  • Provide public health leadership as a member of the district community health improvement team in the areas of assessment, evaluation, and public health planning by providing, interpreting, and using community and population health indicator data and qualitative data in community health assessments and to evaluate community health improvement plan initiatives.

  • Provide the district community health improvement team an epidemiologic perspective to developing sound health education, prevention, and intervention strategies, including the use of public health surveillance data specific for planning strategies to improve population health status, to promote population wellness improvement, to organize and move communities to action for health, to inform public health policy, strengthen media advocacy, and improve school health.

  • Collaborate with the regional Community Health Epidemiologists and Center for Public Health Informatics to prepare county health assessments that meet the needs of internal and external partners. Assure that the most current county- and sub-county specific natality, mortality, morbidity, and risk behavior data are available. Help internal and external partners to interpret and apply these data.

  • Collaborate with the Center for Public Health Informatics to ensure data is produced, available, and disseminated reflecting all communities within the Local Health District, including racial and ethnic communities, faith communities, rural communities, and vulnerable populations (e.g., food and housing insecure, incarcerated, migrant).

  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.

  • Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.

  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.

  • Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications :

Required Skills/Abilities:


 



  • Must possess a degree in public health or a similar health/human service.

  • Must have at least 2-3 years of experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research, with expertise in creating written data summaries.

  • Must have an in-depth understanding of the essential services of public health, the social determinants of health, health equity, the CHA/CHIP assessment processes.

  • The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail and is comfortable taking on more than one project at a time and working in a team environment.

  • Must have the ability to work in a hybrid capacity. Some work will be done across the health district in Winchester, Frederick Co, Clarke Co, Warren Co, Page Co, and Shenandoah Co.



  • Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.

  • Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).

  • Ability to work collaboratively.

  • Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to effectively communicate to large and small group audiences.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.


 


Education and Experience:


 


     A bachelor's degree in a scientific field like biology, chemistry, microbiology is preferred.  This can also be substituted for some scientific education and microbiology work related experience.


 


Physical Requirements:



  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times. 

  • Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

  • Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
