POSITION SUMMARY:


We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious operator to support VDOT work zones in the Richmond District. Responsibilities include driving shadow vehicles and/or TMA (Truck-Mounted Attenuator) vehicles to ensure safe mobile and stationary operations, preventing motorists from driving through wet pavement markings, and adhering to the VDOT Work Area Protection Manual (WAPM). This role requires excellent communication and customer service skills, proficiency with handheld and hands-free communication devices, the ability to read and interpret directions, and fluency in English. Candidates must be comfortable operating a state vehicle daily for extended periods. Training will be provided to ensure compliance with all safety protocols and operational standards. This FULL-TIME position starts at $23-30 per hour depending on experience. This position is located in Colonial Heights, VA.




 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Perform safe driving in VDOT work zones


·         Provide excellent communication


·         Ability to operate handheld communication devices


·         Ability to operate hands free devices while driving (headset)


·         Ability to read and interpret directions


·         Ability to speak English


·         Provide excellent customer service to the public


·         Experienced operator to provide shadow vehicle and/or TMA support for mobile/moving operations and stationary pavement marking operations in the VDOT Richmond District, and per the VDOT Work Area Protection Manual (WAPM)


·         Provide proper drying time for wet pavement markings materials by operating VDOT shadow vehicle(s) and/or TMA(s). Prevent motorists from driving through wet paint.


·         Operate a state vehicle daily, and for extended timeframes.


·         Training will be provided


·         PPE will be provided (hard hat, vest, gloves, shirts)


·         Ability to lift 50lbs


·         Loading/unloading materials


·         Set up/remove work zone cones and signs


·         Operate hand help tools and equipment (such as, but not limited to: gas blower, shovel, broom, cleaning supplies)


·         Works well with others



  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.

  • Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.

  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.

  • Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.






Required Qualifications :
 

Required Skills/Abilities:



  • Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.

  • Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).

  • Ability to work collaboratively.

  • Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education and Experience:



  • High school diploma or equivalent, preferred

  • Possess Basic Work Zone Certification preferred

  • CDL license preferred

  • A valid driver’s license is required


 


Physical Requirements:



  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times. 

  • Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 6:00 am – 5:00 pm.

  • Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
